Good quality plastic weighted chessmen for a mere pittance

Posted by Brian Asbury on 7th Nov 2021

Just got two sets of these chessmen delivered on Friday, opened up the box today. I got them for my son and he is very pleased with the chessmen. Nice colors, camel and black, and the pieces feel very weighty and substantial. Got them for 1/2 price because of loose weights they said, but there's nothing wrong with those chessmen. The Chess Store does it again! Delivers quality plastic weighted chessmen for a steal! Great job guys, all my future chess purchases will be from The Chess Store. We also got a couple of roll-up chess boards, and although they smell like vinyl brand-new, the smell will disappear before long. Nice chess equipment guys!

Worth the $20, but not much more

Posted by Clayton R. on 22nd Nov 2019

Overall nice set, good size, great weight, points not too "pointy" or sharp like some other reviews said. The felt on the bottom could be a little better, it is a sticker, a little pealing and off-center, but not bad at all. The weight is very nice, but there is a little "rattle" sound with some of the pieces. Overall a very good set. Well worth the $20 it costs. I am happy with my purchase and would recommend TheChessStore.com to anyone who asks me.

    Solid attractive value

Posted by Jim on 24th Jun 2018

Just received them yesterday Had guests over for a party and had several players comment on how nice the pieces were. I was pleasantly surprised how attractive they were. Most plastic trinkets are injection molded , and have a seam where the two bits of the mold meet. The chess pieces have all been polished or buffed to remove this “seam” Just another detai” to quality which is appreciated My only regret is that I purchased the chess piece storage box for $5.95.. It’s just a plain cardboard box with the chess store logo... I would forgo that purchase in retrospect. Overall. Great purchase . Very satisfied. Great value.

    Worth $20

Posted by Matt on 13th Mar 2018

The set has very good balance and is plenty heavy. The queen is sharp but that's not a huge deal. The pieces had a little flashing (mark-off) from the die marks and are not nearly as polished looking as the photos. The black pawns especially were a little dull looking. Had I paid full-price ($30), I would be dipleased but for $20 -- it's a fair deal,

    Perfect Staunton set

Posted by Jim H. on 30th Jan 2018

I wanted a classic looking Staunton style set that had great looking knights & chunky rooks. This set delivers in spades on the perfect design of the pieces. The bases are very wide and as such make tipping them over nigh impossible without genuine effort. With triple weighting, they have a very nice heft when handling them adding a very tactile, quality feel to the overall game play. I have a very expensive Italian-made brass Persian set which I love, and have used for thirty years, but honestly it doesn't play any better, in fact probably not as satisfying to play with as they aren't nearly as topple proof as this conqueror set. This is the best money I've spent on chess sets yet...and i really wasn't much! fwiw, I use these on a vinyl 20x20 with 2.25" squares and these work very well with it. However, I'm inclined to think they'd be even happier on a 2.375" square with those wide bases.

    Excellent looking pieces. perfectly weighted.

Posted by Jim on 28th Jan 2018

I am very impressed with the quality, the look, the feel and playability of these classic looking pieces. To my eye, these would be the model of what the Staunton design should look like. A nice chunky weighty rook with wide base, classic bishop shape, a knight without any of the weird-looking-knight-syndrome that so many sets have. Just a excellent looking detailed stallion with laid-back ears. The queen with her pointy crown and king with his majestic cross both with VERY wide bases...perfection. With their wide base and weighty bottoms they are nearly impossible to knock over without intentional effort. Even then they are hard to topple. On a 2.25" square they work well, 2.375" would be even better IMHO with these extra wide bases. Compared to non weighted hollow sets these are a dream to play. I actually like the way these play better than my Per$ian Bra$$ Italfama set because of the lower center of gravity and topple proof nature of the nearly twice as wide bases. As for customer service, fantastic! I had a couple pieces with mfg. marks and they sent me replacement pieces with no questions asked. FANTASTIC! Thanks!

    Good piece....

Posted by Unknown on 11th Jan 2018

The chess pieces are a lot heavier than I thought, and. I am very pleased. I bought them to play out doors and it’s good that it’s hard for them to blow away...
