Our Zagreb series handcrafted chess set been a mainstay in our collection for decades. This design became prominent in the 1950’s when it was first used in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Zagreb in 1959. This set is a slightly smaller version with a 3.25” tall king and a base diameter of 1.375”. Pieces are made from ebonized and natural boxwood and are heavily weighted for exceptional stability on the chess board. Thick green baize pads on the bottom create a soft cushion and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the chess board. The uniquely shaped knight with its arched neck and turned down head is what distinguishes this chess set from others. As is often found on eastern European sets, the king, queen, and bishop finials are made in the opposite color of the main body. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is, what the wood is, where it came from, and when it was made.

Very nice set. Polished and shiny, weighted well, felt bottoms slide smoothly. I'm not a fan of the bishop design, but I new that when I bought it.

Goes very nicely with a walnut and maple board

I use this set with a 2" walnut and maple board. I really like these pieces, they feel nice and substantial. The ebony is light, you can see a bit of wood grain which is nice. My pieces were fine and had a nice even finish.

A good set, although a portion of the horizontal cross atop the Black King was broken off.
Posted by Samuel Naylor, VI on 4th Dec 2017
Order 19524. One-half the horizontal cross on the Black King was broken off. It is a small part of the horizontal portion of the cross---about 1/16" in size. The set was packed in two separate, cellophane bags, inside a small cardboard box, which itself was inside a larger cardboard box with padding materials to protect the chess set.
The set is a Yugoslavia Staunton Chess Set in Ebonized Boxwood & Boxwood; a 3.25" King. Item #30897
I emailed Customer Service Friday, December 1, 2017 to see what solution there is to improve the broken
Cross on the King. I have purchased 2 previous such chess sets from The Chess Store, and they are
working very well.
