This chess set includes our Zagreb series with ebonized and natural boxwood pieces matched with our Walnut and Maple Molded Edge Chess Board. Our Zagreb is commonly referred to as the Zagreb and has been a mainstay in our collection for decades. This design became prominent in the 1950’s when it was first used in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Zagreb in 1959. This is a library size set with a 3.875” tall king and a base diameter of 1.625”. Handcrafted from boxwood, the ebonized pieces are polished to an obsidian black finish nearly indistinguishable from real ebony. Pieces are heavily weight and have thick green baize pads on the bottom for a soft cushion and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the chess board. The uniquely shaped knight with its arched neck and turned down head is what distinguishes this chess set from others. As is often found on eastern European sets, the king, queen, and bishop finials are made in the opposite color of the main body.
Our Walnut and Maple Molded Edge Chess Board from Rechapados Ferrer combines classic design with elegant features to create an eye-catching battle field for your chess game. This is an inlaid chess board handcrafted from high quality walnut and maple veneer and sealed with a polyurethane finish that both protects and enhances the beauty of the wood. A wide and colorful burl wood delimiter accentuates the playing field while the black stained molded edge highlights the entire board. The squares are 2.125” and the footprint of the board is 21.5” square. Four felt pads on the bottom will protect whatever furniture the board sets on.
