Step into chess history with the Zagreb Series, a timeless design celebrated worldwide since its debut at the 1959 World Championship Candidates Match in Zagreb. Known for its bold elegance and distinctive style, this set brings both prestige and performance to your chessboard.

Each piece is expertly handcrafted from solid ebonized and natural boxwood, boasting a rich ebony-black color that closely resembles genuine ebony wood—providing the luxurious look of ebony at a fraction of the cost. This striking contrast is enhanced by the uniquely crafted finials—the king, queen, and bishop each feature accents in the opposite color, a hallmark of Eastern European chess artistry. The 3.875-inch king, with a commanding 1.625-inch base, is heavily weighted at 3.5 ounces for exceptional stability, perfect for competitive play.

One of the set’s most distinctive features is the knight: its gracefully arched neck and turned-down head give it a dynamic, lifelike presence that sets the Zagreb apart from other sets. Thick green baize pads cushion each piece, allowing smooth, quiet movement across your board while protecting its surface.

Every set includes two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity, ensuring you know exactly the history, materials, and craftsmanship behind your chess set. The Zagreb Series combines heritage, artistry, and functionality—making it a prized companion for serious players and collectors alike.

    Impressive Quality

I'm a really picky shopper and I almost didn't even buy the set, but I'm glad I did. The quality is incredible. Perfect weight, perfect look, and the pieces glide on the board effortlessly if you enjoy sliding your pieces around. The pieces are so nice they inspire you to study chess. I plan on studying Tal - Botvinnik 1960 with these pieces.

Ebonized Yugoslav Staunton, 3.875 inch king

Posted by J. Caudill on 25th Oct 2015

This is a truly superb product. The ebonizing of my new set is so good that I had to hold the black pieces under direct sunlight to distinguish them from genuine ebony. They don't quite have that deep luster found only with ebony but they're very close with a deep and even blackness. And the proportions of the pieces are just right, the way a chess set ought to look. And heavy weighting, too. Note: The kings' base in my set is about 1.75". not 1.625" as advertised. House of Staunton has some serious competition here!
