Wood Chess Set Shopping Guide
We have hundreds of wood chess sets with different pieces, chess boards, sizes, types of wood, and price. If you do not have some idea what you are looking for, it can be overwhelming looking through all the different choices and selecting the best one for you. This guide will help you narrow down your search to a smaller number of chess sets to choose from.
Price
Price is usually the first consideration when buying a chess set and will determine which sets are possible candidates. If you do not have a specific chess set in mind, simply start looking through the complete list of chess sets sorted from the lowest to highest price, to see which ones fall within your budget.
Size
Size can be the most important factor for both the chess board and pieces. There could be limited space where the board will sit, such as a table, and this will limit the size of the board. For the pieces you might be looking specifically for a tournament size set with a 3.75" king, or, the largest fanciest chess set you can find. If you have a certain size you are looking for, go to Shop by Size and select either the chess board size or chess pieces size you want and view the available options.
Wood
If you are looking for chess pieces made from a specific type of wood, go to Shop by Wood. On this page you can select the type of wood you are looking for and look through only those sets. Our standard wood combinations are:
- Ebonized & Natural Boxwood ($)
- Acacia & Boxwood ($)
- Golden Rosewood & Boxwood ($)
- Rosewood & Boxwood ($$)
- Burnt Boxwood ($$)
- Painted & Stained with High Gloss Lacquer Finish ($$)
- Ebony & Boxwood ($$$)
- African Padauk & Boxwood ($$$)
Pieces/Model
For some shoppers the most important factor is what the pieces look like. We have from the basic German Knight model that is ideal for tournament play to highly artistic designs. If the “look” is what is most important, then go to Shop by Pieces and look through the different models to see which one you like best, then you can narrow it down by price, size, and the type of wood.
Chess Board
The chess board type of wood and color can be the most important consideration because the chess set will be left out and it needs to go well with the surrounding furniture. If the chess board is the most important factor, you can Shop by Board and search through the different chess boards to see which will look best.
Chess Set with a Box
If a chess board and a wood box for storing the pieces is what you are looking for, go to Sets with a Box, and this will list all available options. The default sort is price from low to high but you can change to the sort you prefer.
Chess Case
If you are looking for a chess set with a case that has a board on top and storage underneath, go to Sets with a Case, and this will display all chess sets available with a case sorted by price from low to high. A chess case is an excellent choice when you want to leave a chess board out but have the option to put the pieces away.
