The Vienna Coffee House Antique Reproduction captures the elegance and character of the chess sets played throughout Austria’s celebrated cafés during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Evolving from earlier Biedermeier chessmen and influenced by the emerging Staunton pattern, Vienna Coffee House sets appeared in many variations, distinguished by their broad bases, graceful profiles, ornate royal pieces, and expressive knights. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted with greater precision, detail, and overall quality than was generally available in the original utilitarian café sets.
The pieces are masterfully handcrafted from solid boxwood. The pieces are finished in a high-gloss, glass-like finish that complement the finish of the chess board. This is a large tournament-size set with a 4" tall king, 1.625"base and heavily weighted providing excellent stability and balance on the chess board. Green baize pads ensure every move glides smoothly and quietly across the board, and two extra queens are included for pawn promotion during tournament play.

Vienna Coffee House laquered chess pieces.
These laquered chess pieces of the Vienna Coffee House line are exquisite! I love the design. The rounded bases are a unique and beautiful feature. I enjoy just looking at these pieces on the board, but using them to play through games or opponents is wonderful! Each piece feels good in the hand and is nicely weighted. Just superb.
