The Vienna Coffee House Antique Reproduction captures the elegance and character of the chess sets played throughout Austria’s celebrated cafés during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Evolving from earlier Biedermeier chessmen and influenced by the emerging Staunton pattern, Vienna Coffee House sets appeared in many variations, distinguished by their broad bases, graceful profiles, ornate royal pieces, and expressive knights.
The pieces are masterfully handcrafted from golden rosewood and boxwood. The pieces are finished in a high-gloss, glass-like finish that enhances the colors of the wood and perfectly complement the finish of the chess board. This is a large tournament-size set with a 4" tall king, 1.625"base and heavily weighted providing excellent stability and balance on the chess board. Green baize pads ensure every move glides smoothly and quietly across the board, and two extra queens are included for pawn promotion during tournament play.
