Our Old English Classic represents the traditional Staunton chess set at its finest. Inspired by the distinguished Jaques of London patterns of the 19th century, its design captures the defining character of those early English chessmen—from the stately king and elegant queen to the deeply mitered bishops, classically sculpted knights, substantial rooks, and beautifully proportioned pawns. The original Staunton pattern was introduced in England in 1849 and quickly became the recognized standard for serious chess, admired for its perfect marriage of visual elegance, immediate piece recognition, and practical playability.
These are handcrafted ebony and boxwood pieces with a traditional polished lacquer finish. The king is 3.9” tall and has a 1.7” diameter base. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional balance and stability on the chess board. Green billiard cloth pads on the bottom allow the pieces to easily slide across the chess board and have a quiet and soft feel when sitting down. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is and where it came from.
