Steeped in the history of chess, this unique chess set includes our Cambridge Springs antique reproduction chess pieces matched with our Prestige Macassar Ebony and Bird’s-Eye Maple Chess Board. Our Cambridge Springs faithfully recreates the pieces used at the historic 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress, the first major international chess tournament held in America during the 20th century. Staged at the grand Hotel Rider in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, the event brought together many of the era’s greatest masters, including World Champion Emanuel Lasker, Harry Nelson Pillsbury, Mikhail Chigorin, Carl Schlechter, and Frank Marshall, whose remarkable undefeated victory established him among the world’s elite. With their robust proportions, broad bases, and dignified Staunton styling, these substantial pieces were ideally suited to serious competitive play and entirely worthy of one of the most celebrated tournaments in American chess history.
The pieces are masterfully crafted one piece at a time from solid boxwood. The ebonized pieces are hand-polished to a lustrous ebony-like finish while the natural boxwood pieces have a warm maple-color tone with subtle grain. This is a tournament-size set with a 4" tall king, 1.625"base and heavily weighted providing excellent stability and balance on the chess board. Green baize pads ensure every move glides smoothly and quietly across the board, and two extra queens are included for pawn promotion during tournament play.
The centerpiece of this set is our Prestige Collection Macassar Ebony & Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board. The rich black and burnt umber Macassar ebony creates a dramatic contrast against the warm golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. A wide Macassar ebony frame surrounds the board, while an elegant burl wood delimiter between the frame and squares adds warmth, depth, and a sophisticated finishing touch. Our exclusive Grand Piano Lacquer finish enhances the natural beauty of the wood with a crystal-clear, glass-like appearance that gives the board remarkable richness and visual depth. The board measures 21.7 inches overall and has 2.125-inch squares.
