This distinguished chess set combines our British Staunton chess pieces with our Prestige Macassar Ebony and Bird’s-Eye Maple Chess Board. Inspired by an original design from the renowned British Chess Company of the late 19th century, the British Staunton embodies the graceful proportions and traditional features of the classic Staunton style chessmen.
Each piece is expertly turned on the lathe to exacting standards. The ebony pieces are polished to a lustrous obsidian-black luster while the boxwood pieces have a warm maple-color tone with subtle grain, the perfect complement to the chess board. This is a large tournament-size set with a 4-inch tall king and a 1.625-inch base. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional balance and stability and have thick green baize pads for smooth, quiet movement across the board. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion.
The centerpiece of this set is our Prestige Collection Macassar Ebony & Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board. The rich black and burnt umber Macassar ebony creates a dramatic contrast against the warm golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. A wide Macassar ebony frame surrounds the board, while an elegant burl wood delimiter between the frame and squares adds warmth, depth, and a sophisticated finishing touch. Our exclusive Grand Piano Lacquer finish enhances the natural beauty of the wood with a crystal-clear, glass-like appearance that gives the board remarkable richness and visual depth. The board measures 21.7 inches overall and has 2.125-inch squares.
