Our Cambridge Springs Antique Reproduction Chess Set faithfully recreates the pieces used at the historic 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress, the first major international chess tournament held in America during the 20th century. Staged at the grand Hotel Rider in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, the event brought together many of the era’s greatest masters, including World Champion Emanuel Lasker, Harry Nelson Pillsbury, Mikhail Chigorin, Carl Schlechter, and Frank Marshall, whose remarkable undefeated victory established him among the world’s elite. The tournament also gave its name to the enduring Cambridge Springs Defense. With their robust proportions, broad bases, and dignified Staunton styling, these substantial pieces were ideally suited to serious competitive play and entirely worthy of one of the most celebrated tournaments in American chess history.
These are ebonized and natural boxwood pieces with a traditional polished lacquer finish. The king is 4" tall king with a 1.75" wide base and are heavily weighted for exceptional balance and stability on the chess board. The pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board and we include two extra queens for pawn promotion.
