This chess set is the same one used by the legendary American Grandmaster Bobby Fischer when he beat reigning world champion and Grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. These handsome pieces have traditional Staunton features and are a favorite for chess players wanting a set that will stand up to the rigor of frequent use. These are boxwood pieces with a unique decorative design carved into each piece and a high gloss lacquer finish. The pieces are heavily weighted for superior balance and stability on the chess board. The king is 3.75" tall and has a base diameter of 1.625", the perfect size for tournament chess games. Thick green billiard cloth pads let the pieces slide smoothly across the chess board and a quite soft feel when sitting down. Our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Black Border Chess Board is handcrafted from the finest veneers and sealed in a semi-gloss polyurethane finish to both protect and enhance the character of the wood. This unique wood combination is designed to display the rich color of the walnut burl while highlighting the luxurious golden color of the bird's-eye maple. The natural wood colors combine to make the perfect contrast with the natural boxwood and obsidian black chess pieces. This board features 2” squares and has a footprint of 19.5" and is .5” thick. For balance of design and visual aesthetics, we surrounded the board with a wide bird’s-eye maple frame and accented both sides with a solid black border to highlight the playing area.
