This elegant, handcrafted chess set is a replica of the Northern Upright chessmen first turned in England back in the 1840s, prior to the advent of the Staunton chessmen. Commonly referred to as an English playing set, this design, and others like it were the sets most used by the famous chess players of the day. The pieces feature simple cylindrical columns and a large, tapered base with the king having an urn shaped head and the queen a simple round head, both capped with finials. The bishop features a large miter and deep “V” vertical slit common on all the English playing sets. The knights have an elegant shape and detailed features creating an aesthetically handsome chess set.
This is a large set with a 4.25" tall king and a base diameter of 1.7”, a comfortable size for playing competitive chess games. The pieces are made of the finest ebony and boxwood with the boxwood pieces antiqued to give them the appearance of an old vintage chess set. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability and have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a Certificate of Manufacture so you will always know what the set is, where it came from, and when it was made. Far more than a mere chess set, this collection of pieces is nothing less than a fine piece of art. Whether you are looking for one special chess set for your game at home, or you are a collector of fine chessmen, the Northern Upright chess pieces will take you back in time and add a special enjoyment to every game.
