Our Dublin 1870 antique reproduction handcrafted chess set originates from designs that originated in Ireland in the early eighteen hundreds. This pattern and one’s similar were commonly used in social games, tournaments, and pubs where chess was a popular past time. The elegant hourglass shape of the pieces is the distinguishing feature of this chess set. Several companies produced this chess set in a variety of materials, sizes, and designs. As one would imagine, these pieces require a great deal of careful turning by hand to reproduce the shape and detail in their original form.

This is a new handcrafted chess set made by the finest carvers in the world. These pieces are made from boxwood with the black pieces being dyed a solid black and then polished to create the look of real ebony wood. The boxwood pieces are treated and stained to create the patina look of hundred-year-old boxwood. The king is 4" tall and has a base of 1.4". The pieces are nicely weighted to add stability on the chess board and have thick green baize pads. We include one extra queen of each color for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is, what it is made from, where it came from, and what year it was made. Playing chess will take on an extra charm and sense of nostalgia as you move the pieces, and the game unfolds.

    Dublin Antique Reproduction Chess Set

Posted by Steven Burgess on 4th Apr 2024

This is a nice set to play when you're going to play among friends, in a nice relaxed setting. The Dublin chess set looks so friendly -- the rolly-polly pieces -- I can't help but laugh every time I look at the set. It seems like a set that's down at the local Dublin pub for ages, waiting for people to play it. The details of the pieces are so nice, especially the Knight. Any time you grip the pieces they are so comfortable to handle. And they look so OLD, like they are antiqued. This is going to be one set that I use in playing friends, with a Guinness on the side!
