Our Dublin 1870 antique reproduction chess set originates from designs that were produced and became popular in Ireland in the early eighteen hundreds. This particular pattern and similar ones were commonly used in social games, tournaments, and pubs where chess was a popular past time. The elegant hourglass shape of the pieces is the distinguishing feature. Several companies produced this chess set in a variety of materials, sizes, and designs. We chose this particular pattern because of the overall beauty of the profile and the handsome knights. As one would imagine, these pieces require a great deal of careful turning to reproduce the shape and detail in its original form.
This is a new handcrafted chess set made by the finest carvers in the world. These pieces are made from boxwood with the black pieces being dyed a solid black and then polished to create the look of real ebony wood. The white pieces are left a natural boxwood and hand polished to a beautiful luster. The king is 4.1" tall and has a base of 1.4". The pieces are nicely weighted to add stability on the chess board and have thick green baize pads. We include one extra queen of each color for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is, what it's made from, where it came from, and what year it was made.Playing chess will take on an extra charm and sense of nostalgia as you move the pieces and the game unfolds.
