This exquisite chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. These pieces are made from boxwood and have been painted cardinal red and ivory followed by a high gloss lacquer finish. Each and every piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. The pieces are sealed in a high gloss lacquer giving the pieces a glass-like finish. In keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping to identify them from the queen-side pieces.
This is a very large set with a 4.4” king that has a base diameter of 1.9”. The pieces are heavily weighted for superior stability on the chess board with the full set weighing an impressive 90 ounces. Pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board. We include 2 spare queens for pawn promotion. Far more than a mere chess set, this collection of pieces is nothing less than a fine piece of art. Whether you are looking for one special chess set for your game at home or you’re a collector of fine chessmen, the 1849 Heirloom Staunton will undoubtedly add more enjoyment to every game you play.
