Chess is is the most popular game played in Russia and many chess set designs have originated from Russia with unique characteristics consistently used on Russian sets. This set is made from ebonized and natural boxwood and has a 3.75" king with a 1.7" wide base. This pattern has a graceful profile that curves from the simple base up to large collars. The king has a plain finial rather than a Cross pattée found on English sets and the queen lacks a pointed coronet found on traditional Staunton sets. The bishop has a large round miter but is not slotted keeping with most Russian designs. The knight is short and stocky with basic features and a nicely carved main. The shapes and profile of the pieces are well designed and create an attractive and coherent appearance. The pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft landing on the chess board and we include two extra queens for pawn promotion. This is a fabulous chess set for any chess game whether the game at home or a tournament match.
