This is a reproduction of an old Russian playing set that was produced and commonly used for casual games and tournament chess matches during the mid 1900s. This pattern has the features commonly found on many Russian sets during this era with large bulbous shaped bases and lack of any collars separating the columns and top. The king has a simply shaped finial rather than a Cross pattée found on English sets and the queen does not have a pointed coronet. The bishop miter also lacks the common slot all of which are the distinguishing features of a Russian set. Yet, the shapes and profile of the pieces are well designed and create an attractive and coherent look. These pieces are made from ebonized and natural boxwood and are weighted for stability and balance on the chess board. Overall a wonderful set for the player looking for a new set of pieces that is out of ordinary Staunton design.
