This handsome and sturdy mahogany chess box is the perfect chess box for storing your chessmen. It has an old world-charm with its lock and key for securing the lid and an emerald green felt lined interior with a divider in the center for separating the two colors. This is an inlaid wood box with a beautiful mahogany veneer on the outside finished with a satin polyurethane for a rich shine. High quality hinges and lock add to the attractiveness of this box. The bottom of the box is covered in with black felt to protect furniture where it might sit. This box is designed for smaller sets with up to a 3" king.

I purchased the German Knight Staunton Rosewood & Boxwood chess piece set for the 2.75" king, and the Small Mahogany divided box with felt lining. The craftsmanship, hingework, and finish were first-class. For the sale price, you couldn't do better. I comparison shopped and this chess piece box was the best "bang for your buck."This is the way to go to preserve your chess pieces.
This is my second chess box from "The Chess Store." The first was the larger sized mahogany box, intended for my 4" king sized pieces. They fit with room to spare. This box, which was delivered via FEDEX in 8 days, was for my 3" king sized pieces, which fit fine. The box itself looks identical to the larger one except that it is smaller and the hardware is chrome colored instead of the larger ones gold. The hinges are solid but the locking mechanism is the weak link in this otherwise well build unit (see my previous review for more details).
First of all, I received the item quickly via FedEx. When I opened it up to look it over, it impressed me as a great bargain for the money. As we all know, real wood is very expensive these days so it was no surprise to see the box made of veneer. It looks nice and is quite sturdy. As the ad indicates, the hinges are of some quality. My only issue is with the locking mechanism, which is kind of cheap. When the key is inserted and turned, a thin metal hook comes out and wraps around a post inside the lid, but this is done unevenly and with resistance. Besides this quirk, I would still recommend it.
