This chess set includes our Hadrian Staunton in genuine ebony and boxwood matched together with our Black and Ash Burl Deluxe chess board. This elegant chess set is named after Hadrian, the famous Roman Emperor and military administrator that ruled from 117 to 138. Hadrian is known for having re-built the Pantheon and building the Temple of Venus and Roma but his most famous work was Hadrian's Wall which stretch for over 73 miles across Britain and marked the northern limit of Roman Britain. The Hadrian features a bridle and reigns and finely carved features including ears, eyes, mane, and mouth. This is a club size set with a 4.4" tall king and an extra wide base. The king has an ornate finial that that incorporates two small balls, one on each side of the finial. The lathe work is extraordinary with compound collars and eloquent lines turned into the base. Even the rook stands out as an extraordinary piece with its' unique parapet and crenelations. The pawns are extra-large making them easy to handle during the game.
Our Black and Ash Burl Deluxe chess board is a favorite for ebony and boxwood chess sets. The black and golden color of the natural ash burl wood creates a rich looking backdrop with its high gloss glass-like finish. A pinstripe around the playing area along with an extra wide frame adds elegance to an already spectacular chess board. This is an inlaid chess board made for us by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain and the quality of the craftsmanship is unsurpassed. The squares are 2.375" with the chess board measuring 23.5" overall and .625" thick. Whether you are a collector or looking for your one special chess set, you will be thoroughly pleased with Hadrian!
