Picture this beautiful Staunton wood chess set sitting atop your chess board ready for a game or just adding to the decor of your living room. Our British Staunton was inspired by the old British Chess Company design from many years ago. This chess set features a 3.5” tall king with a base diameter of 1.5”, an ideal size for casual chess games at home. Pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board and are nicely weighted for stability. The rosewood pieces will range from a rich burgundy to a blend of orange and burnt umber colors while the cream colored natural boxwood is the perfect wood for the white chess pieces.  The pieces are individually hand polished and lacquered to a beautiful shine. This old-world, heirloom quality chess set is a favorite with players and collectors alike with its traditional Staunton design.

    3.5" British Staunton

Posted by Robert Fraker on 24th Oct 2015

I built my own chess board and needed specific information on dimensions to know if pieces would fit in the drawer compartments. The Chess Store web site was excellent in information provided and ease of use. The Rosewood British Satunton was my third choice. My first two choices, the 3.75" Wingfield in rosewood were out of stock. I viewed many websites and the prices seemed comparable. Although a day after ordering this set, I blundered across another site that had British Staunton for significantly less. Without the pieces in hand it would be difficult to compare quality. Speaking of quality, the pieces are nicely weighted and have a good feel. The quality of this set is good, but I think not as good as suggested by the website photos. The carved areas of the knight are not as smooth and glossy as shown in the photos. One of the white bishops has a small cut/nick on the top roundover of the base. It's not bad enough to return the set, but it should have been caught, and maybe it was. The service was very good. It shipped the day after I ordered it, was well packaged, and I received it in less than a week. All in all, it's a nice set at what seems to be a comparatively reasonable price. It looks very good on my new board, and I'm satisfied.
