This exquisite chess set is a precise replica of an original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1850. This elegant Staunton pattern is sometimes referred to as the "Morphy" and is one of the earliest Staunton designs. These magnificent pieces are made from genuine ebony and boxwood with the boxwood having been stained to create the patina appearance of authentic vintage chessmen while looking brand new. Each and every piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. The pieces are finished in a matte lacquer.
This is a large set with a 4” king that has a base diameter of 1.875”. The pieces are heavily weighted for superior stability on the chess board with the full set weighing an impressive 90 ounces. Pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board. We include 2 spare queens for pawn promotion. Far more than a mere chess set, this collection of pieces is nothing less than a fine piece of art. Whether you are looking for one special chess set for your game at home or you’re a collector of fine chessmen, the 1850 Heirloom Staunton will undoubtedly add more enjoyment to every game you play.
